Bishop Kevin Vann shares in a letter to those of faith his thoughts, hopes and beliefs as he prepares for a visit to Rome to visit with our new Holy Father, Pope Leo XIV, his friend and classmate from years past. As he writes: it is truly like going home!
Dear friends in the Lord,
As I write these words, I am beginning to prepare for a trip to Rome with Archbishop Jose H. Gomez of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles and newly ordained Father David Moreno of the Diocese of Orange.
The attached picture you see below was taken during my Canon Law school days at the Dominican University in Rome, the “Angelicum” in the fall of 1982. We were the Angelicum family gathered for a family photo! You will notice in there two young priests (Father Kevin Vann and Father Robert Prevost!) who studied at the same time.
I am truly grateful for the canonical and pastoral foundation of those four years, and the relationships of those years built with the help of God!
Returning then to Rome for me is truly like “going home”! This is especially true now with the blessing of Pope Leo XIV, who for me is Vicar of Christ and a friend! I hope to be able to see him in those days ahead!
Let us live in the present moment and pray for him each day!
In his first address to the College of Cardinals he said:
“In our own day, the Church offers to everyone the treasury of her social teaching in response to another industrial revolution and to developments in the field of artificial intelligence that pose new challenges for the defense of human dignity, justice and labor.” (Saturday, May 10, 2025)
Viva il Papa!
May the Lord bless you always! With constant prayer from the Diocese of Orange!
+Kevin Vann
Bishop of Orange California.
