SOCIAL MEDIA INFORMS! BUT DOES IT GIVE YOU INSIGHTS INTO GOD?

Social Media, no matter how we receive it, is a reminder to us that decisions we make allow us to accept, reject or ignore how we may live our life. It invariably provides us with multitudes of topics that perk our curiosity so much so at times that we cannot function until we seek an answer with which we can live.

News and gossip seem to be the two largest areas of social media Americans choose to fill their minds. News keeps their lives current. They are aware and use it to speak about a multitude of items which give them a hand up and a feeling of expertise whether experienced or not.

Gossip gives an insight into areas that should not be shared or used to discredit others and gives one an upper hand to use to one’s advantage. Some people’s lives have been destroyed by what may seem like a trivial incident.

Fully initiated Catholics who practice their faith need to avoid such negative aspects that can turn them away from God and all the good things he offers us throughout our lives. We need to understand our intentions when we share items that can cause negative reactions.

Instead, we should follow The Epistle of St. Paul to the Colossians: “Let your speech be always gracious and in good taste, and strive to respond properly to all who address you.”                                                  (Col. 4:6)

An alternative to current social media which can avoid us from being on the negative side of God is to spend time throughout our day reading Bible verses. These can be taken from a book by a particular author, a period or something that sparks your interest. I have found that reading the Gospel and the readings prior to Sunday’s Mass gives you a better insight what you hear and what might be shared in a homily.

One thing I do know, the more time you spend getting to know the Lord, the less interesting is Social Media to help find what you believe is important in your life. Follow the ways of the Lord, and your days will be filled with gifts God has given you when you were created to share them with all you know and meet.
